Why Do We Do What We Do?

What motivates us to do what we do? Is it the search for happiness that drives us? Wouldn’t that be natural?

Or is it something else?

After a few days at Michael’s place I felt it coming. Even before I had left New York I was nervous and knew that something big was on the horizon.

We had a baby sitter for the kids that Wednesday afternoon and Megan was seeing a doctor with Jude. Michael has a neighbor who is not around much a few houses down the road and he has the keys to her place. The two of us went there and I had Michael’s full attention. My illusionary self (ego) was in trouble. 🙂

He said, “Carsten I feel you are ready for this now. What would you do if you would have no family? How would you live your live if there is no family that can see what you create and accomplish?”

I was stunned by this question. I thought I’d freed myself of wanting to impress my family many years ago. I had no answer.

“Well, I ask you this question because when I feel you I feel (and here comes !!!!!) that all you have done so far you’ve only done to make your father happy.”

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! That  came out of nowhere! Everything I’ve done so far!? To make my father happy!?

Everything? That includes working in a bank, sailing across the Atlantic in a sailboat, moving to New York City, killing myself as a photo assistant, being a photographer, doing yoga, going to the gym, doing kung fu, trying to date supermodels and of course a long list of other things that would take too much time to mention here.

Really everything? For my Father? Can this be?
