Imagine

How would the world look like if there would be no countries? What would happen if we all right here right now would stop being American, German, Chinese, Polish, Armenian, Australian, Russian, Brazilian, Turkish, Malaysian, Swiss, Serbian or Japanese to mention a few? What if we would let go of the attachment to the country we were born in and would all start to be New Yorkers?

New York is located on the American continent but what does it really stand for? It stands for the world. People come here from every single one of the 195 different countries. You can find every religion, skin color and ethnicity. Wherever the people who live here came from at a certain point they become New Yorkers, their home is the world.

They are letting go of their idea to be part of a certain group or country and become cosmopolitans.

Imagine there’s no countries

It isn’t hard to do

Nothing to kill or die for….

(John Lennon/Imagine Lyrics)

Having no countries would stop most of the fighting in the world. There is still religion and greed we can fight for but what an enormous difference would it make?! The Second World War was not a religious war. It was mainly fought by Christians against Christians. What insanity! All this pain, suffering, destruction and cruelty for what? For an idea, a flag, all for nothing else but an illusion.

I was in Berlin January last year. I did my sightseeing and looked at the Reichstag and the Brandenburger Tor. Hundreds of thousand of people died to defend it, hundreds of thousand of people died to take it. Hitler being insane and starting war with the whole world, invading country after country. Germany bombing London and the World bombing Germany, both of my grandfathers being in the midst of it fighting for their “Fatherland”.

And the pain and suffering does not end here. Who survived the war and escaped hell was traumatized. These people, my grandfathers, my father should have spent a couple of years on a couch to sort things out afterwards. But Europe is not New York. People consider therapy to be for “insane” people not knowing that because of our programming we are all insane to begin with and that having lived through a war does make things only worse.

What happens is that trauma gets passed on to the next generation. Suddenly I had all these issues like fear of the future and did not even know where they came from.

What would a Hitler, a Mussolini, a Napoleon, a Stalin have done if there would have been no countries? What would have been there to fight for? Who could they have attacked?

Looking at it makes it so obvious that it is an illusion. We are born into this place called “earth”. We are here for a limited time only, most of us for less then 100 years. We don’t understand why we are here, what this place is about and where we are going after our visit is over. We live on a beautiful planet, most of it is water but there is also some land. Somebody a long time ago came u with the idea that we can own that land.

We claim a part of the planet, draw an imaginative border around it and come up with a flag for it. Now we fight for it. Either to expand what we already have or to defend it. But can we own it anyway? How long can we own it? 50 years? 70 years? 90 years? How long can we be an American, a German, and African? Not longer then 100 years. What are we when we die?

I want to connect this thought back to Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj. He said, “Everything that has a beginning and has an end is not real”. Countries have a beginning and an end. They are not real they are imagined.

You may say that I’m a dreamer

But I’m not the only one

I hope someday you’ll join us

And the world will live as one

(John Lennon/Imagine Lyrics)
